Best Iceland Waterfall Tours in the North

Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland

Akureyri North Iceland Waterfalls and Nature Baths Small Group Tour

You will visit three amazing waterfalls on this tour.

The Dettifoss waterfall was an unbelievable moment and one I will never forget.

You can literally feel the falls reverberating inside of you.

Something to note is that this is the only tour on this list that visits this magnificent waterfall.

So, if this particular site is on your waterfall bucket list, then this is the best Iceland waterfall tour for you.

The Akureyri North Iceland Waterfalls and Nature Baths Small Group Tour is a scenic day trip that takes visitors to some of the most impressive waterfalls and geothermal attractions in the region.

Here is some descriptive information about the tour:

  • Godafoss: Known as the “Waterfall of the Gods,” Godafoss is one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. The falls are particularly striking in the winter when they are surrounded by snow and ice.
  • Dettifoss: Located in Vatnajökull National Park. Dettifoss is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe. The sheer force of the water creates a massive plume of mist and spray, making it a dramatic and awe-inspiring sight. This is hands down my favorite!
  • Selfoss: Situated a short distance from Dettifoss, Selfoss is a smaller waterfall that is known for its intricate and unusual rock formations.

The tour begins with pick up from Akureyri hotels, the airport, or a meet-up at Hotel Kea.

Guests have the option to swim in the geothermal lagoon at Myvatn Nature Baths which is a popular attraction in the area. You will need to bring a swimsuit and towel if you wish to opt-in.

And although the soaking is an additional cost I would say it is totally worth it. It is similar to the Blue Lagoon experience, but just much less commercial.

If you choose not to swim, you can enjoy a meal at the restaurant that overlooks the bath.

Visitors will also explore Grjótagjá Rift, which is a small cave that was used as a filming location for the popular TV show, Game of Thrones.

Lake Myvatn and Godafoss Waterfall Day Tour from Akureyri

The Lake Myvatn and Godafoss Waterfall Day Tour from Akureyri is a fantastic way to explore the natural wonders of Iceland’s north.

This full-day tour takes approximately 8 hours and includes hotel pickup, ensuring a hassle-free experience for travelers.

One of the highlights of the tour is the stunning Godafoss waterfall, known as the “Waterfall of the Gods.” This majestic waterfall is not only impressive in size but also has a rich historical and cultural significance.

According to legend, the waterfall was named when a pagan priest threw his statues of the gods into the falls, symbolically renouncing his old beliefs in favor of Christianity.

Another must-visit location on the tour is the Myvatn Nature Baths, where you can relax in the geothermal waters and take in the stunning surrounding landscape.

Bathing suits are required for the nature baths. Admission to the baths and food costs are extra, but the experience is well worth the extra cost, as you’ll be able to unwind and rejuvenate in the soothing waters of the hot springs. A beautiful and less crowded option from the Blue Lagoon.

The tour also includes visits to other natural sites, such as the Dimmuborgir Lava Formations and Hverir mud pools.

You’ll also have the opportunity to explore the Grotcaja cave, which is an impressive and eerie volcanic cave used in the filming of the hit TV show Game of Thrones.
